Jordan King says active participation key to successful reform

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The key to ensure the success of political reform is to encourage everyone to participate in the upcoming elections based on well-defined programmes, His Majesty King Abdullah has said. Active participation in the elections will lead to the formation of parliamentary governments and support a culture of democracy, the King said at the Sun Valley Economic Forum in the US state of Idaho last week, according to a Royal Court statement. The Monarch, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania, participated in the forum, which was held from Wednesday through Friday, and met with participating US and international business leaders, intellectuals and academicians. Discussions focused on cooperation prospects with Jordan, especially in the economy, trade and investment. At the forum, the King highlighted the current developments in the Middle East and Jordan's efforts to achieve comprehensive reform in the political, economic and social domains, the statement said. Highlighting the reform process, he said the countdown has begun in Jordan for the next parliamentary elections to be held by the end of this year after several reform-related laws have been endorsed. The King said Jordan seeks to present a model of gradual reform to create a new phase of development and modernisation that secures a better future and meets the aspirations of all Jordanians. His Majesty also highlighted Jordan's security and stability as the main features of the country's favourable investment environment, citing opportunities in the energy, transport and water sectors. At present, Jordan hosts several successful international companies, he noted, according to the statement. The King also addressed efforts to achieve peace in the region and reaffirmed Jordan's position vis-à-vis the situation in Syria, which calls for finding a political solution to the crisis. The Sun Valley Economic Forum has been held annually in July since 1983, with the participation of leading figures and businessmen from around the world, who convene to discuss global economic and political challenges.
