Jordan- 27,000 Syrians treated at public health facilities

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Around 27,000 Syrians have received treatment at public hospitals and health centres in Ramtha District and Mafraq Governorate so far, according to health ministry figures. The ministry's spokesperson, Hatem Azruie, said the pressure is greater on health facilities in Mafraq, 80km northeast of Amman, as more than 20,000 Syrians received healthcare services there, compared to 7,000 in Ramtha. "Health facilities in the northern region have received patients with various health conditions, including chronic and communicable diseases, in addition to dealing with delivery cases," Azruie told The Jordan Times over the phone. There are also other displaced Syrians who were referred to other hospitals across the Kingdom, but the final figures will be available soon, according to Azruie. In a previous statement, Health Minister Abdul Latif Wreikat said the cost of providing health services for the Syrians currently staying in Jordan will reach JD30 million this year. Over 140,000 Syrians have entered the Kingdom since the start of a violent crackdown on dissent in their country 16 months ago, the majority of whom have taken refuge in the northern region. Public facilities provide health services and medication free of charge to Syrians, according to Wreikat. He said the ministry has vaccinated 25,000 Syrian children under the age of five at a cost of JD800,000. In addition to the healthcare services provided by the government of Jordan, the Italian government opened a field hospital for Syrian refugees in Mafraq last week. The $780,000, 16-bed hospital has the capacity of receiving 100 patients a day. The international humanitarian organisation Médecins du Monde has also established a clinic in Ramtha, in premises provided by the municipality, to provide healthcare for Syrians there. The organisation allocated JD500,000 for equipping the clinic with the needed equipment and medicine.
