(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) An Emirati student, who allegedly threatened to assault an on-duty police officer and verbally abused and even spat on him, skipped the first hearing of his trial on Thursday.
The 24-year-old student, who is in provisional detention, did not show up in the Court of First Instance to face the charges of threatening, assaulting and insulting an on-duty police officer.
The 25-year-old Emirati police corporal said during the Public Prosecution investigation that he was assigned by a police lieutenant to move the defendant's brother from the Rashidiya police station to the Al Qusais detention centre on a day in March last year. As he was taking his brother, the defendant threatened to beat him up if he entered the detention centre. He then allegedly verbally abused the officer and his family and spat on him and on his uniform. Another police officer testified that he was with the complainant when the defendant threatened to beat him up. The complainant wanted to move the defendant's brother to another detention centre.
The witness added that the defendant verbally abused and spat on his colleague and on his official dress. According to the report of the Criminal Lab, the DNA of the saliva stains found on the complainant's dress matched with the defendant's.
