(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) A vendor and two maids were each sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday for stealing jewellery worth Dh200,000 from a 64-year-old woman after barging into her son's flat.
All of them, Sri Lankans, aged 27, 25 and 27, will be deported after serving their prison terms.
The defendants assaulted the Indian woman with their hands and tied her up before stealing the jewellery of her and her daughter-in-law.
The complainant said that the incident happened when she was in her son's flat in Mirdiff area in March. She heard a knocking on the door and she thought it was the water supplier and opened it and saw the defendants.
They pushed her inside and locked the door. They tied her up with a sheet fetched from the house and grabbed her grandson.
As she was screaming for help the man lied on top of her and tried to cover her mouth. She bit his hand and he beat her with his hands all over her body and she lost consciousness. About half an hour later, she woke up and found the flat in a mess. She untied herself and found her grandson in a room.
The gold jewellery she was wearing was gone. Four bracelets her grandson was wearing and the gold jewellery of her daughter-in-law kept in a bedroom cupboard were also missing.
She said that the jewellery was worth Dh200,000.
A police lieutenant said that they received the complaint about the robbery that day. The complainant told them that one of the maids had been in their flat before.
The police raided the defendants' flat in Al Qusais and recovered part of the jewellery.
The vendor told the police that they had planned the robbery in advance. They did it after one of the maids went there for cleaning work on the same day. They had learnt about the gold jewellery in the flat from the maid.
