UAE- Psychiatrists to examine 'torturer' father, girlfriend

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A bench of the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday decided to refer Emirati man H.S., who is accused of torturing to death his eight-year-old daughter Wadeema, and his compatriot girlfriend A.A. to Rashid Hospital for their examination by a panel of psychiatrists. The court wants to determine whether H.S. and A.A. suffered from any mental illness and whether, if any, it affects their behaviour, consciousness and perception of actions and consequences mainly at the time of the crimes they committed. A detailed psychiatrist report would be prepared about the two. Twenty-nine-year-old H.S. is accused of torturing and illegally confining and depriving his two daughters, Wadeema and seven-year-old Mira, of their freedom for about six months with the use of force, which led to the death of the elder daughter. He earlier pleaded not guilty. H.S., an ex-security supervisor, admitted earlier, however, that he hid Wadeema's body by burying it in a remote desert location in Al Badayer in Sharjah without official authorisation. He claimed that he was mentally ill and was not aware of what he was doing. In the court on Wednesday, he claimed that he had been suffering from depression and stress and receiving treatment at a medical centre. His 27-year-old live-in girlfriend, A.A., had earlier pleaded guilty to the torture and confinement charges claiming that she did it on her won. She also admitted that she and H.S. hid Wadeema's body. During Wednesday's hearing, she claimed that she suffered from schizophrenia and sometimes she would forget what she had done. According to the prosecution records, the two defendants used different kinds of torture on Wadeema and her surviving sister Mira, including beating them up with a Tazer gun and electric wire, burning them with a hot iron and lighted cigarettes, and pouring boiling water on them. The confinement used to be in the bathroom or closet for hours with no water or food. H.S. denied using the Taser gun to torture Wadeema, saying it was not working. The prosecution accused the two defendants of illegally confining and torturing the two sisters mentally and physically with no mercy which led to the death of Wadeema and the injury of Mira with a permanent disability of 10 per cent due to the burns on all over her body. Wadeema's body was found in May about six months after the alleged torture. It could not be confirmed whether H.S. was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the victim's death.
