Jordan Cabinet approves establishing refugee camps for Syrians

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Cabinet on Monday agreed to establish "emergency camps" for Syrian refugees and start receiving Syrians residing in Jordan to live in them. During its Monday's session, chaired by Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh, the Cabinet also decided to allow the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to establish camps for foreigners who come to Jordan via the Syrian territories in order to organise ways to deal with them. Upon recommendations by the IOM, authorities will decide whether to return the foreigners to their native countries, send them to third countries or back to Syria, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. In addition, the Council of Ministers tasked the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO) to supervise the camps, whose expenses will be covered by the UN Refugees Agency, under an agreement to be signed for this effect. According to the Cabinet decision, the JHCO will be the sole entity responsible for receiving and distributing aid to Syrian refugees in the Kingdom. Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and Government Spokesperson Samih Maaytah said the decisions were taken in light of the growing number of Syrian refugees in Jordan and the need to organise efforts to provide them with humanitarian services, particularly as the Kingdom already lacks the sufficient resources. Over 140,000 Syrians have entered the Kingdom since March 2011.
