Jordan King briefs US congressional aides on reform, region


(MENAFN- Jordan Times) His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday discussed the latest regional developments, bilateral ties and the Kingdom's reform process with a visiting delegation of US congressional aides. During the meeting, the Monarch reviewed the measures Jordan has taken to accelerate the reform process, paramount among which are the laws governing the political system. The King noted that Jordan is also working on reforms to address the economic challenges facing the country. On peace efforts, the Monarch reiterated the centrality of the Palestinian issue, stressing that the international community should shoulder its responsibility to push the peace process forward and find a just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state formula. The King also underlined the US role in bringing the Palestinians and Israelis back to the negotiating table to discuss all final status issues to realise all the legitimate rights of the Palestinians and ensure the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. His Majesty also expressed concern over the situation in Syria, stressing the importance of stopping violence and arriving at a political solution to the crisis. During the meeting, which was attended by the director of the King's office, Imad Fakhoury, and US Ambassador Stuart E. Jones, the Monarch also expressed his appreciation for the US Congress' support of Jordan's reform endeavour. For their part, members of the delegation praised the King's efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region and reforms in Jordan, voicing keenness to support Jordanian-US relations. Also on Monday, HRH Princess Basma met with the delegation at the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development, where the US congressional aides were acquainted with the fund's programmes. The Princess also highlighted the efforts of the Jordanian National Commission for Women to empower Jordanian women. During his meeting with the congressional aides, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh expressed Jordan's appreciation for US support, especially the additional assistance that Congress approved to give the Kingdom in 2013. The minister also outlined the Kingdom's reform process and briefed the delegates on Jordan's efforts to revive Middle East peace talks, reiterating the need to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria. For their part, the delegates commended Jordan's leading role in the region. This visit is the ninth in a series of visits to the Kingdom by congressional aides to get a closer look at the political, social and economic situation in Jordan.
