(MENAFN) US Defence Security Cooperation Agency said that Kuwait placed a USD49 million order of military equipment, including 300 air-to-surface missiles from Lockheed Martin, Arabian Business reported.
The oil-rich country plans a modernization drive for its armed forces and to expand its existing Air Force fleet to counter threats posed by a potential attack, US authorities said.
Gulf countries are spending billions of dollars to increase their defense capabilities amid increasing tensions with Iran over its controversial nuclear programme.
The MENA region spent USD91 billion on arming in 2010, more than half of the amount came from GCC states.
That is projected to increase significantly over the next three years as Arab governments invest in strengthening their security and sovereignty.
