Jordan- Customs agents seize illegal fireworks

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Customs personnel in Aqaba on Saturday foiled an attempt to smuggle fireworks into the country in a shipping container, a Jordan Customs Department (JCD) official said. The importer had presented documents claiming that the container was carrying furniture, but JCD agents became suspicious and searched it, the official told The Jordan Times. "Agents found 578 cartons of fireworks hidden among the furniture and arrested the driver," the official added. The customs agents seized the shipment, which was intended for transport to a merchant in Amman in violation of the law. "The JCD bans the import of fireworks because of their dangerous effect on society and public safety," the official stated. In 2009, the government banned the import of fireworks, excluding those imported for public agencies.
