(MENAFN Press) (EMAILWIRE.COM, June 30, 2012 ) Plymouth MI. With the high unemployment rate in the U.S., military veterans are often having a hard time finding a good job after leaving active duty. With the unemployment rates for veterans hovering around 30 percent, Keith Paul, the founder and president of HandyPro, a national Handyman Service and senior home modification company headquartered in Plymouth, Mich., thought it was important to try to help veterans find gainful employment.
That's why he has agreed to be part of the Veteran Hiring Fair and Open House being held in Detroit June 26-28 at Cobo Center. This national event, sponsored by the Veteran's Administration, is designed to give military veterans an opportunity to interview with more than 200 area businesses and organizations that have jobs available.
Our veterans have done so much for our country, that I feel obligated to help them make an easier transition into civilian life with job opportunities, Paul said. He said he became particularly aware of the veterans plight through an Ann Arbor veteran who struggled to find a good paying job in Michigan when he left the military in 1992.
Back then, the economic condition was much better than today, yet I still had to settle for minimum wage positions after sending out 70 resumes, said John Hooppaw, a technician with HandyPro. With our current economic situation, it is extremely difficult for veterans to find work today.
Hooppaw wprled with Paul at the two-day Veteran Hiring Fair to interview vets for potential HandyPro (http://www.handypro.com) jobs in Michigan and for openings in the company's other locations in 14 states.
Paul said in addition to connecting veterans with jobs, the fair also included a veteran entrepreneurial event called VetFran hosted by the International Franchise Association. Veterans were able to meet with franchisors who offer incentives exclusive to them. According to the IFA the number of veteran franchise owned businesses increased over 35%, over 4,000 in the last year.
Because we are expanding rapidly through our HandyPro franchise network, we are also interested in talking with veterans who may want to own their own business, Paul said. Those veterans interested in job or franchise opportunities with HandyPro should go to the company's website at http://handypro.com/franchise.html .
