Honda plans rare earths recycling

(MENAFN) Honda Motor Co. announced that as part of the carmaker's efforts to be green, in 2012, the company will begin recycling rare earths and other chief materials in hybrid auto batteries, reported AP. The Japanese firm said that the move would be a first for the car industry, adding that the company is committed to lessen pollution and global warming, including experimental projects to combine solar with its fuel-cell cars to derive energy solely from nature and produce just water. It added that Japan is dependent on imports for rare earth elements, which are necessary for making high-tech products; however, as the country buys most of these elements from China, the supply has been occasionally threatened over political disputes between the 2 countries. It is worth noting that Honda's profit during the January-March period hiked 61 percent from 2011, whereas global sales are forecasted to reach 4.3 million units for the current fiscal year.
