Jordan- State budget to consume 50 per cent of foreign aid

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Half of the $2.5 billion in foreign assistance expected this year in the form of grants and soft loans will support the state budget, Planning and International Cooperation Minister Jafar Hassan said on Saturday. "We received assurances from the donor community that the assistance will be received in the last months of the current year and this commitment by the international community comes in appreciation of efforts aimed at supporting the development process and helping the Kingdom through its financial difficulties," the minister said. Speaking at a press conference at the Jordan Press Association, he stressed that the government is pursuing a policy of self-reliance rather than relying on international assistance. "We should not build our development and economic policies on assumptions that the foreign assistance will continue to pour into the country because at certain stage this assistance will eventually stop," the minister said. He added: "The international community is expecting the Kingdom to take measures that should lead to stimulating the economy to become the driving force behind the development process which will eventually bring positive results to the public life." He underlined that the government is keen to implement income-generating projects, stressing that the ministry is in contact with the local communities and the private sector in order to set the priorities identified by the local communities.
