Saudi mulls importing soft wheat

(MENAFN) Saudi Grain Silos & Flour Mills Organization (GSFMO) stated that the Kingdom is considering buying soft wheat to meet growing domestic demand, reported Khaleej Times. GSFMO said that the country, which imports hard wheat at the current time, plans to be fully dependent on wheat imports in 4 years to save water. The organization added that it is studying the local consumer demand for the commodity in order to decide whether to import it or not. On the other hand, the Kingdom forecasts this year's wheat imports to match last year's, which reached 2 million tons. It is worth noting that the biggest exporter of wheat to Saudi in 2011 was the EU, with a 36-percent share, followed by Canada, the US and Australia.
