Saudi Arabia to open skies

(MENAFN) The Saudi Arabian Kingdom is planning to gradually liberalize aviation by phasing in a variety of new airlines, reported Gulf News. The largest economy in the Middle East is in the process of slowly acquiring licenses for new airlines to fly into the country, as to avoid overcrowding. Last year, senior officials at Saudi's aviation authority said they received applications from 14 companies looking to start flying into the Kingdom. The Kingdom has two domestic airlines; the Saudi Arabian Airlines and the National Air Services. Pre-qualification bidding for licenses is set to start at the end of this month. An aviation authority spokesperson said that completely foreign owned airlines could qualify for the license as long as they operate from a domestic base in the Kingdom. Licenses are expected to be issued by the end of September, according to aviation officials.
