(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The national fire safety and protection campaign formed by the Ministry of Interior under the instructions of Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, fined and issued warnings to 76 companies and workshops for ignoring fire safety regulation and conditions. Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, said violations could cause massive fires leading to loss of lives and property. The violations include improper methods of storage, lack of installation of fire protection equipment, failure to renew fire safety maintenance contracts, accommodation of workers inside factories and warehouses, storing flammable material without proper care, exposing gas cylinders to high temperatures, lack of ventilations, failing to maintain emergency exists and installing partitions and making additions to the premises without license from the municipality and civil defence. He explained that inspections had been intensified since March, in 10 industrial areas of the emirate to prevent fires during summer. Inspectors visited 6,000 establishments, factories, warehouses, workshops, offices and labour camps. This month, inspectors would visit 18 industrial areas based on a schedule prepared to cover all areas. Brig Al Suwaidi, said the inspectors also distribute fire safety awareness publications to all establishments and workers to educate them about the violations. The campaign also came up with new fire safety regulations like not allowing workers to stay on site after working hours, providing proper lightening, not accumulating waste around the factory premises, providing first aid boxes in labour accommodation and so on. He noted that the campaign would continue during the three summer months on a daily basis in order to achieve 70 visits per day. Brig Al Suwaidi pointed out that a database has been drawn up related to the facilities they had already visited.
