Assad's brinkmanship

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Syria is now in a fix. With each passing day, the crisis is pushing it to the brink of disaster. While the world expected Damascus to take steps that could help normalise the situation, it's ironic that President Bashar Al Assad has opted to act irrationally, again. This is no politics that you come to deny the very existence of the problem by brushing aside realties. In his address to the parliament, Syria's iron-hand man acted in an irresponsible manner when he squarely laid the blame for rebellion on the rebels, and one way or the other exonerated his regime from charges of crimes against humanity. This brings to fore the fact that Damascus is not serious in addressing the issue and mere stalemate politics could result in derailing whatever faith the international community has in finding an amicable way out of a situation that's getting out of control. It was widely expected of Assad to, at least, propose a new mechanism wherein he could climb down from the pitch of fervour that has prevented the crisis from being defused. By blaming foreign forces for the divisions that Syria is facing today, he might have underscored nationalism for a few, but the reality is that his country is sliding deep into the abyss of chaos and confrontation. Assad still holds the trump card to make the difference felt. He can win friends and allies on his side once again, if he seriously pledges to implement the Six-Point peace plan of the United Nations and the Arab League. The crisis is too risky to be shelved for another day.
