Jordan reiterates condemnation of Houla massacre

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Jordan on Wednesday reiterated its condemnation of the recent massacre in the Syrian town of Houla in Homs, which claimed the lives of over 100 innocent civilians, including women and children. In remarks during a meeting with UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan, Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh underlined Jordan's position in support of Annan's six-point peace plan for Syria and the need to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis. The premier called for an end to the bloodshed in the country and the realisation of the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. He also stressed Jordan's full rejection of the use of force against unarmed civilians, highlighting the Kingdom's support for Annan's mission and its willingness to exert the needed efforts to preserve stability in the neighbouring country. During the meeting, the two officials discussed the latest developments regarding the issue and efforts to solve the crisis and end the suffering of the Syrian people. They stressed the importance of an immediate end to the bloodshed and violence in Syria and the need to continue coordination and consultation to ensure the success of Annan's mission. Annan is visiting the Kingdom to brief Jordanian officials on his efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis, particularly the outcome of his visit to Damascus on Tuesday and his meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Annan outlined his plan to end the crisis in Syria, voicing his appreciation of Jordan's support for his mission. He also commended Jordan's efforts to alleviate the suffering of Syrian refugees in the Kingdom and urged international organisations to support the Kingdom in this regard. Also on Wednesday, Annan briefed Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh on his visit to Damascus and expressed appreciation for Jordan's role in dealing with the humanitarian repercussions of the Syrian crisis, according to Petra. In press statements, Judeh described the meeting as "fruitful", noting that talks with Annan focused on his meeting with the Syrian leadership and the recent massacre in the country. "We discussed and exchanged views on the steps that should be taken," Judeh said, noting that the Kingdom believes that a political solution is what is needed to guarantee the unity of the country and the safety of its people. Annan described the Syrian issue as "complicated" and of great interest to the region and the world. He stressed the importance of giving priority to protecting the Syrian people and to ending their suffering. Later on Wednesday, Annan's spokesperson, Ahmad Fawzi, issued a statement quoting the UN envoy as saying that "it is important to find a solution that will lead to a democratic transition in Syria", adding that "with goodwill and hard work, we can succeed." Annan voiced gratitude for Jordan's support for the peace mission. Meanwhile, Reuters quoted UN observers as saying on Wednesday that 13 bodies had been discovered bound and shot in eastern Syria. Syrian activists said the victims were army defectors killed by President Assad's forces, but it was not possible to verify their accounts, according to Reuters.
