'Jordan keen to further cooperation with Council of Europe'


(MENAFN- Jordan Times) His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday stressed Jordan's commitment to strengthening its cooperation with the Council of Europe. During a meeting with Thorbjørn Jagland, the council's secretary general, the King briefed Jagland on the country's comprehensive reform process and the steps that Jordan has taken so far to boost democracy and expand the base of public participation in the decision-making process. King Abdullah and Jagland also reviewed bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Middle East region, as well as other issues of mutual concern The Monarch also highlighted the efforts being exerted to push Middle East peace talks forward, emphasising the responsibility of the international community in helping the Palestinians and Israelis return to the negotiating table. The 47-member Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg, France, seeks to develop common and democratic principles throughout Europe, on the basis of the European Convention on Human Rights and other reference texts on the protection of individuals, according to its website. At Sunday's meeting, which was attended by Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Jagland expressed his appreciation for the King's efforts to achieve political, economic and social reform, stressing the council's readiness to support Jordan in this domain. He also commended King Abdullah's continued efforts to achieve peace in the region. Judeh, Senate President Taher Masri and Lower House Speaker Abdul Karim Dughmi held separate meetings with Jagland and examined means to foster cooperation and expertise exchange on constitutional legislation and judicial, political and legislative reform, in particular. Jagland and his accompanying delegation will participate today in a workshop carried out by the Lower House on the Constitutional Court. In reference to the workshop, Jagland said it was part of the council's routine cooperation with Jordan, noting that the establishment of a constitutional court and an independent elections commission were major achievements for the country. The European official also voiced hope that Jordanians would achieve an elections law that enjoyed the broadest possible consensus.
