Jordan condemns Houla massacre

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The government on Sunday denounced the massacre that took place in the Syrian town of Houla in Homs and the killing of innocent civilians, mainly women and children. In a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and Government Spokesperson Samih Maaytah stressed Jordan's total rejection of the use of force against unarmed civilians. Maaytah also reiterated the government's position on the need for a political solution to stop the bloodshed in Syria and safeguard the country's sovereignty and the safety of its people. Over 90 civilians were killed in Houla, more than 32 of whom were children, according to the UN observer mission in Syria. The shelling of the town of Houla by Syrian regime forces began at around midday on Friday and continued until dawn on Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said. State news agency SANA blamed "armed terrorist groups" for the killings, adding that "clashes led to the killing of several terrorists and the martyrdom of several members of the special forces".
