Jordan- Demonstrators decry gov't decision to raise fuel, power prices

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Dozens of Jordanians marched from Amman's Sixth Circle to the Prime Ministry at the Fourth Circle on Sunday in protest against the government's recent decision to raise the prices of fuel and electricity. The government on Saturday raised the price of 95-octane gasoline and said it would "adjust" the prices of electricity provided to large consumers, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Organised by the recently formed campaign "Ask for your right", demonstrators held up Jordanian flags and banners denouncing the decision. This is the second event the campaign has held so far, according to organisers. Mohammad Hindi, a member of the campaign, said that the government's decision was unacceptable because it would hurt all segments of society. "Officials said that only rich people would be affected. When the government decides to adjust the prices of electricity provided to large consumers like factories, they will raise the prices of their products, which will affect consumers," he told The Jordan Times at the Sixth Circle before the march began. Moein Sharif, a public sector employee, pointed out that Jordanians are facing financial turmoil and said the price increases would add more burdens on people. "The government's move will escalate demonstrations in Jordan because Jordanians will not take it anymore in the future," Sharif warned. Moataz Othman, a university student, said he expected the decision to increase the suicide rate in Jordan. "A lot of people have committed suicide in protest against their difficult financial situation. The government's step will lead more people to commit suicide," he said. Hindi agreed, predicting that the rise in prices would result in "social chaos". "God knows what families will do to cope with the difficult situation they are facing. Perhaps the number of crimes will increase," he said.
