Jordan- Four arrested for dismantling pedestrian bridge

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Four people were arrested on Saturday after reportedly dismantling parts of a pedestrian bridge on Mecca Street in Amman, official sources said. The four, who were not identified by officials, were reportedly taking away part of the bridge's staircase when two officials from the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) approached them, Public Security Department Spokesperson Lt. Col. Mohammad Khatib said. "The four informed the officials that they had an order from GAM for their work," Khatib told The Jordan Times. In the meantime, police were called in and the workers showed them an order that was not issued by GAM, he said. "We ordered their arrest pending further investigation into the case," Khatib added. "GAM decided to demolish the entire bridge because it posed a threat to the safety of pedestrians and motorists," said a GAM official, who declined to be named. "Obviously there was an attack on the bridge and we will issue an official response tomorrow regarding the incident," the official added. The bridge was part of the Hikmat Road Safety initiative that was launched a few years ago to curb road accidents in Jordan.
