(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) As part of arrangements for the holy month of Ramadan, the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy has decided to set up committees to monitor the markets in the Eastern region, with the aim of providing strategic commodities during the holy month and at discount prices.
The panels will also keep an eye on the sale outlets and companies dealing with the supply of food stuff and products. Special committees will be formed to monitor the groceries are not manipulating prices during Ramadan.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Consumer Protection Department in Fujairah. The meeting was chaired by Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the department. Representatives from the economic development departments, municipalities in Fujairah and the East Coast and major sale outlets attended the meeting.
The Consumer Protection Department reached a deal with 320 sale outlets and cooperative societies to fix the price of 1,650 products until the end of 2012. Other initiatives the department has taken include fixing the price of vegetables and fruits as well as Ramadan food items basket, which contains 15 items at prices ranging from Dh90 to Dh180. The initiatives also include discounts. Agreements were also reached with the economic development departments and the municipalities not to levy any fees on special offers and discounts.
Dr Nuaimi said an extensive meeting was held with fish traders in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and meetings will be held with fishermen's associations to chart out plan to determine the fish price during the holy month of Ramadan. He called on the departments of economic development to hold seminars and organise a number of meetings and lectures across the country, universities and schools to create sense of awareness among public on rationalising consumption.
