High Turnout In Egypt's Presidential Election

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Voters turned out in high numbers in most parts of Egypt on Wednesday, as the country held its first ever free presidential election. The turnout was particularly high in the cities of Cairo and Giza, where long queues stretching outside the polling stations caused traffic congestion, DPA quoted state media and observers as reporting. 'The turnout is enormous and more than expected,' said Hatem Begatu, the Secretary General of the Election Commission. He added that all polling stations, except for three, had opened as scheduled at 8 am local time (0600 GMT). The polling, monitored by local and foreign non-governmental groups, was going on smoothly, state television reported. Results are not expected until May 29. If no candidate secures an outright majority in the first round, there will be a run-off between the top two candidates on June 16 and 17.
