(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned Friday
that the current slow economic recovery may portend another global
recession, dpa reported.
At the close of a two-day forum on the world economy, Ban
described the General Assembly debate among high-ranking government
officials and economists as 'rich and illuminating.'
'I am deeply concerned about the slow economic recovery and the
possibility of another worldwide recession,' which would wipe out
hard-won gains on jobs and income, Ban said in closing the debate.
'Let us leave here today with one shared goal: to galvanize global
support for a transformative agenda for change,' he said.
Ban said Thursday that the old-world economic model is broken and
should be replaced with a sustainable long-term plan in which all
countries can benefit.
He said ideas discussed in New York will be channeled to the
Summit on Sustainable Development on June 20-22 in Rio de Janeiro
when more than 100 national leaders and thousands non-government
groups will attend the meetings.
During discussions at the UN in New York, government leaders urged
bold steps to invigorate job markets, especially for young people.
The forum was organized in four roundtable discussions on
unemployment, debt sustainability, creation of an environment for
increasing production, and increasing stability and transparency in
the global financial system.
The UN said an estimated 200 million people worldwide have lost
their jobs and sources of income since the economic crisis began in
2008. Efforts to improve the economy were described as a 'jobless
recovery' because of the mass of people that remain unemployed.
The UN said 400 million jobs will be needed worldwide over the
next decade just to employ the next generation.
