Saudi Arabia eases sponsorship rules


(MENAFN) Saudi undersecretary for labour affairs Ahmed Al Hemaidan unveiled new sponsorship regulations that will give expats working in Saudi Arabia improved employment rights, Saudi Gazette reported. The newspaper quoted the official as saying that under the new amendments it would become illegal to confiscate foreign workers' passports or ban them from traveling within the country. He was also quoted as saying that foreign residents will also be given the freedom to transfer their sponsorship from one employer to another. According to media reports, the Ministry of Labour is also expected to introduce a law by the end of the year which will replace individual sponsors with an alternative body. The report also said that the Commission for Affairs of Foreign Workers is to be affiliated to the Ministry of Labour, and will also be responsible for monitoring the conditions of foreign workers in the kingdom under the rules. Other possible moves by the ministry include introducing an obligatory insurance policy to guarantee the financial rights of the employee.
