Jordan- Opposition parties warns against price hikes

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The Opposition Parties Higher Coordination Committee on Tuesday warned that any increase in prices of basic commodities will add new burdens for already financially troubled citizens. In a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the committee warned that the government's intention to increase prices of electricity and fuel derivatives will definitely affect the prices of basic commodities, doubling citizens' financial burdens and increasing poverty. The committee includes the Islamic Action Front, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, and several leftist parties. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh said the government intends to take a set of measures to tackle the widening budget deficit, which is expected to reach unprecedented levels later this year under the prevailing economic conditions. During a meeting with chief editors of daily newspapers and columnists, he said the package, which will be implemented before he presents his policy statement to Parliament on May 20, will include austerity measures to be adopted by government officials, reducing subsidies on certain commodities as well as amending some laws to increase state revenues, including the Income Tax Law. The premier added that this economic package will partially tackle the widening budget deficit and avoid harming low- and middle-income Jordanians.
