Jordan- Brawl breaks out at Al al Bayt University

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Violence broke out among students at Al al Bayt University in Mafraq, 80 kilometres north of Amman, on Sunday morning over who should head the student union, university officials said. Dean of Student Affairs Khalil Hajjaj told The Jordan Times that he had to cancel the swearing-in ceremony for those who won the student union elections 10 days ago when a fight erupted among approximately 150 students on campus. "The students thought that we were holding elections for the administrative committee and they erupted in violence. I cancelled the event but they [the fighting students] moved elsewhere on campus," he said. "They started hitting each other with stones. Ten students have been injured but only two of them needed stitches," Hajjaj added. He refused to comment on which tribes the students belonged to and described it as an "ongoing problem". Hajjaj rejected reports saying that the students had used weapons and said that campus security succeeded in dispersing the students after approximately an hour of fighting and without interference from police or Gendarmerie forces. He also said that the university had not handed out any immediate punishments but that a committee had been formed to investigate the incident.
