The Mexican meddle

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The presence of Mexicans in the United States has always been a political issue. But never in history has it been so much on the backburner, as it is these days. If polls and research studies are any criterion, the rate of Mexican immigration to the US has stalled, rather dipped. Though a positive trend it goes on to establish the social mobility at work between a developed and a developing country. As rightly stated by the Pew Hispanic Center's economic factors, increased border control and lower birth rates have all contributed in lessening the influx of dispossessed Mexicans across the harsh and unfriendly terrain. If estimates are to be believed more than 15 million Mexicans are on US soil and a comfortable 50 per cent of them are illegal to date. Moreover, a silent majority of them are involved in America's informal economy and tend to live under the shadows for reasons best known to them. This is an enigma of American society and an issue that for long has not been conveniently addressed. But the new statistics indicate a change of heart on the part of Mexicans and might be for reasons of globalisation that have brought an aura of development and stability. This new revelation on the eve of presidential elections in the US is bound to get a heated response. The legislations on the part of Arizona and Alabama, to stem the tide of immigration, are already challenged in the apex court - and the issue remains too volcanic to be ignored for long. President Barack Obama whose administration had deported the maximum number of illegal from the south, at least, has a policy to boast. Which is why it surprisingly finds an electorate in the Hispanic-Mexican community who really value the efforts for streamlining the faceless entities. On the contrary, Mitt Romney doesn't have a policy at all. With economics shaping the agenda for polls, immigration cannot be a stranded issue for long.
