(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Industry and Trade Minister Sami Gammoh said Monday in his capacity as acting finance minister that the Kingdom's financial position during the first quarter of 2012 was "positive".
Speaking during a press conference along other ministers and senior officials, he indicated that total revenues during the first three months of this year were more than the amount registered during the same period of last year.
Gammoh did not mention figures but described the increase in income as a positive indicator besides a rise in foreign investments.
However, the minister expressed concern over future challenges facing the national economy noting that the authorities are cautious when it comes to taking certain firm measures to reduce the level of budget deficit as that would definitely include cutting expenditures.
He indicated that the government received promises from international financial funds and donors to provide assistance to the Kingdom but also underlined the importance of curbing levels of energy consumption as one of several measures to assure donors and international funds that Jordan is worthy of their support.
According to Energy and Mineral Resources Secretary General Farouq Hiyari, the government will remove a huge burden on the budget by cutting down energy consumption.
"The people are not ready now to accept such strong measures," the minister said as observers express doubt about government measures against corruption and overspending.
