Jordan- Spanish dancers perform 'stochastic' dance piece

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) Spanish dancers Muriel Romero and Pablo Palacio had their first chance to present their new dance called "Stocos" outside Spain when they performed at Al Hussein Cultural Centre on Sunday. Romero said that she and Palacio, invited by the Instituto Cervantes (IC) in Amman to take part in the 4th Amman Contemporary Dance Festival, were excited to perform outside Spain and show their work in Jordan. "Although I had no idea whether Jordanians would like it or not, I am really thankful to have this experience to deal with new audiences and show our art to them," she told The Jordan Times in an interview on Sunday. The 39-year-old Spanish performer explained that "Stocos" was one of three pieces that emerged from an encounter between the two performers in Germany five years ago. "I was dancing there and he was working on a project as a composer. When we first met, we were talking about the relationship between music and dance," Romero recounted. The 50-minute "Stocos" - meaning stochastic music or music generated by mathematical processes - is the third of a trilogy of pieces that explore the relationship between the movement of sound and physical movement, according to a statement from the IC. Romero said the dance consists of two dancers interacting with music and visual elements. "The dance does not represent a story; it is about using science with art," she explained. The artists created "Stocos" in 2010 and first performed it in Barcelona in 2011, Romero said, adding that the audience found the piece very intense and novel. "It lets you go with the images in the show. It was like a dream for the audience," Romero, who first started dancing professionally at the age of 15, told The Jordan Times. The Amman Contemporary Dance Festival, which began yesterday and will conclude April 28, is organised by the King Hussein Foundation's National Centre for Culture and Arts, according to a statement from the centre. Six countries are participating in the event: Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Norway, Switzerland and Canada.
