(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt's Higher Judicial Election Commission (HJEC) announced Saturday evening it disqualified 10 candidates from contesting the upcoming presidential elections for failure to meet the legal criteria. These are: Maj.-Gen Omar Suleiman - former intelligence chief, Khairat Al-Shater - deputy mentor of the Muslim Brotherhood group, Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail - the Salafi candidate, Ayman Nour - of the New Ghad Party, Mortadha Manour, Ibrahim Al-Gharib, Ahmad Awadh, Mamdouh Qotb, Hosam Khairat and Ashraf Barouma. They will not be able to stand for the polls, due on May 23-24, for inability to meet the requirements set by the election law and the executive statutes, the HJEC ruled after scrutinizing the credentials tabled by the candidates between March 10 and April 8. However, the disqualifying candidates can appeal against today's ruling within the coming 48 hours pending a final judgment.
