Jordan- Inspection campaign to find illegal guest workers continues 

(MENAFN - Jordan Times) The Ministry of Labour is extending an inspection campaign that it started last month to find guest workers who are violating labour regulations, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Minister of Labour Maher Wakid told The Jordan Times that although the ministry had given illegal guest workers, especially Egyptians, a two-month grace period to rectify their status, "some of them have yet to do so".

He explained that those who violate labour regulations are also causing other problems.

According to Wakid the majority of the Egyptian labourers who held a protest in front of their country's embassy earlier this week, that ended in a clash with Gendarmerie forces, did not have residency permits.

Figures he presented indicated that there are currently more than 300,000 Egyptian labourers in Jordan.

"We do not have an accurate figure on illegal guest workers, but we will continue our inspection campaign to regulate the Jordanian labour market," the minister said.

Last month, the ministry announced that around 100 guest workers would be repatriated after being found in violation of the Labour Law.

Meanwhile, Wakid said that he would receive his Egyptian counterpart next week to discuss the issue.
