UAE- Phone scam gang busted

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Sharjah Police have arrested a gang comprising 13 Pakistani nationals for making calls to people asking them to transfer money to their telephones in return for valuable prizes. The fraudsters claimed to be calling from a well-known communications company. The crime section of the Dubai Police section was tipped off about the illegal activity. According to a Sharjah Police official, after confirming the information, the house was raided and one of the fraudsters was caught red handed while making a phone call to a victim. He was convincing the woman on the other side of the line to transfer money to his credit immediately in order to receive the grand prize. The gang used a rented house with three bedrooms as a hub for their activity and the rooms were designed in a manner similar to that of a communications company. The official explained that the gang members spoke Arabic and other languages fluently. "They used to tell people to transfer money to their credit in order to win prizes worth dirhams half a million to one million presented by a communications company." All the gang members have been arrested. Investigations revealed that it was a well-organised network comprising members living in the UAE and aboard. Investigations also revealed that the gang leader was bringing people from other countries to the UAE on visit visas to work for him. Twenty two mobile phones and many sim cards used for the scam have been found from the apartment. The suspects have been detained and will be referred to the public prosecution.
