Baghdad Summit a failure - Syrian opposition 

(MENAFN - Aswat Al-Iraq) Syrian opposition leader Haitham al-Malih described the Baghdad Arab League Summit as "a failure," noting that "it did not come to any solution for the Syrian people."


Malih, a renegade of the Syrian National Council, praised the Saudi and Qatari stands.


"We did not expect anything from the Summit, due to our experiences in previous ones as well as the foreign ministerial levels," Sharq al-Awsat daily quoted him as saying.


"The Arab League and Annan cannot stop the bloodshed in Syria," he added.


Malih confirmed that the only solution is to arm the Syrian Free Army and end the regime by force.


He praised the Saudi and Qatari stance on the Syrian question.

The Arab Summit was held during the last three days, 27-29 March, 2012, in the well-fortified Green Zone with the participation of 10 Arab leaders and 17 foreign ministers, as well as hundreds of political personalities that represented 21 countries participated in the Summit.

Syria was not invited as a result of the Arab League boycott imposed due to the violent actions taking place there.


The final communiqu of the Summit on the Syrian question stressed "support for the legitimate demands of the Syrian people in freedom, democracy and right to determine its future."


It denounced the killing and violent acts to preserve the Syrian unity and safety of its people.


Support was given in the communiqu to Arab League resolutions and UN envoy Kofi Annan.


In a press conference yesterday, Arab League Secretary General Nabeel Al-Arabi stated that "President Assad was given more than one chance."


He confirmed that Syria should abide by the Arab League initiative immediately and fully.
