(MENAFN - Gulf Times) More than 700 people, including pharmacists, pharmacy students and professionals in the field from Qatar and other GCC Countries, have attended the second Qatar International Pharmaceutical Conference under the theme "Achieving excellence in practising pharmaceutical care, education and research".

Organised jointly by the pharmacy departments of Hamad Hospital and Al Wakrah Hospital, the conference also saw renowned speakers from the UK and the US speaking at it.

"The conference targets those professionals working in the health sector with the aim of upgrading their knowledge and skills through the exchange of information and expertise and achieving excellence and competence in practising pharmaceutical care, education as well as research. We are committed to focus on continuing pharmaceutical education through conferences and researches," said Hamad Hospital pharmacy department director Dr Haleema

Yousef al-Tamimi.

The conference was addressed by US-based Carolina College of Pharmacy dean Prof Joseph DePierro, who presented a lecture entitled: "Clinical Pharmacy in 2012" and American Pharmacists Association chairman and North Coast Hospital/Evanston University Pharmacy Services supervisor Dr Stan Kent on "An example of pharmacy practice in a USA Hospital".


Other speakers were: Dr Mike Rose on the latest techniques in the continuing education of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians; Dr Sisly DePierro on the role of pharmacists in the enhancement of pharmaceutical care provided for diabetics; Dr Zakri Wheper, associate professor for clinical pharmacy at Berdo University tackled the latest anti-coagulant drugs issue, while Dr Kamal Sabrah, a World Health Organisation (WHO) consultant and former assistant minister of health for pharmaceutical affairs in Egypt and professor of clinical pharmacy presented a lecture on the financial pharmacology of clinical pharmacy.

Ein-Shams University clinical pharmacology professor Dr Abdul-Raheem Murad presented two lectures titled: "Human communication skills" and "The concept of drug biological prevalence in the body".

Dr Edward Aromarase from Australia delivered a lecture on "Review of detriments and side effects" while King Faisal Hospital and Research Centre director of the pharmacy and pharmacology specialist as well as clinical pharmacy consultant for Organ Transplant Committee Dr Ahmed Aljedia presented a lecture on the role of clinical pharmacists in the enhancement of the healthcare plan.
