Qatar National Broadband, Barwa Real Estate Sign Framework Agreement


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Qatar National Broadband Company (Q.NBN) and Barwa Real Estate Company (Barwa) have signed a framework agreement to build a nationwide high-speed fiber broadband network in support of the government''s plan to build a national network of fiber broadband. The agreement brings very high-speed broadband services to 95% of households and 100% of government and businesses in Qatar by 2015. Q.NBN will provide Fiber-to-Home (FTTH) network to a multitude of Barwa projects, allowing thousands of residential and commercial tenants of Barwa to utilize the next generation of connectivity. The agreement was signed by Q.NBN Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mohamed Al-Mannai and the Barwa Group CEO, Abdulla Bin Abdulaziz Turki Al-Subaie. According to the terms of the agreement, Q.NBN will ensure the installation of FTTH - through a network of underground telecom ducts - at Barwa projects, and subsequently lease it to operators to offer retail telecom services. The Q.NBN will also provide access to the FTTH infrastructure of Barwa for non-telecom services. Commenting on the event, Q.NBN''s CEO Mohamed Al-Mannai stressed the significance of Barwa''s commitment to work with Q.NBN as part of the company''s vision of approaching all their projects in a sustainable manner while enriching lives of its tenants. He reaffirmed Q.NBN ''s commitment to build a shareable fiber optic network and provide access to it in order to provide telecommunications services to all users. Q.NBN is signing a number of agreements with all stakeholders to accelerate the completion of the national broadband network, said Al-Mannai. For his part, Barwa Group CEO Abdulla Al-Subaie, said the framework agreement with Q.NBN, which comes in line with the company''s mission of contribution to the national sustainable growth, provides an edge in technology employed in its real estate projects. This would pave the way to achieving state of the art equipped property, he went on saying. By signing this framework agreement, Barwa assures the continuous drive and determination to be in accord with Qatar''s overarching development plan, Al-Subaie concluded. In March 2011, the Supreme Council of Information & Communication (ictQATAR) announced the formation of the Qatar National Broadband Network Company (Q.NBN), which has the mandate to accelerate the rollout of a nationwide, open, and accessible high-speed broadband Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network. Q.NBN is a fully independent company operating within the existing laws and under license conditions issued by ictQATAR. It is expected to create a new wave of effective use of multimedia and communications applications spurring economic development and growth of knowledge in Qatar.
