Writer: US decides what Palestinian kids read

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Palestinian history, culture and education, like the people in the occupied areas, are being decided by outside forces. The school curriculum is formulated by outsiders, says renowned Palestinian writer Mourid Barghouti. “Our education system is intervened, now Hillary Clinton decides our curriculum. Universities and our cultural institutions are almost dead,” Barghouti, told The Peninsula. The writer was in Doha on a three-day visit on the invitation of Al Fakhoora, an international campaign committed to providing and expanding access to education for students in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. To date, it has distributed 100 scholarships to young scholars to cover the cost of their education all through their undergraduate years. “We used to do better before the Oslo accord, since the leadership accepted the ill-fated Oslo accord, they put all the Palestinian culture on a track of loss,” he added. The Palestinian history taught in schools has been fabricated and everything is based only on the peace process, he said, adding that decision making forces in Palestine were not completely Palestinian since the Oslo accord. “The decision making forces are no more Palestinian and its influenced, dictated by outside elements,” Barghouti said. “I keep making my opposition known, I write against this. I will not stop writing against this sabotage of culture,” he added. The peace process in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has taken shape over the years since 1970, despite the ongoing violence in the Middle East and an all-or-nothing attitude towards lasting peace which has prevailed for most of the 20th century. “This peace process in Palestine has become an industry. For 20 years they are taking us through a peace process and nobody is talking of peace. They are talking, they are preparing the tables, they are taking photographs and we are losing being Palestinians. Palestinian history and geography, past and future are threatened to be lost and the peace process is live and kicking,” said Barghouti. “If anyone is for justice in Palestine, all that implies is that a genuine person, and have to support and I have to give my effort and going to give my shoulder without any hesitation,” he said.
