Israel stalls Qatari Diar project near Ramallah

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A small township being built near Ramallah in Palestine by a local company in partnership with Qatari Diar is in doldrums since the access road to the upcoming township is to pass through Israeli-controlled land, making Tel Aviv's approval a must. A local Arabic daily reported yesterday quoting foreign media reports that approval to build the access road to Al Rawabi project was sought from the Israeli authorities two years ago but no response had been received so far. The upcoming township is to house 40,000 people and is located 10km north of Ramallah. But if the access road is not built a decision is to be taken at some point of time to scrap the entire project. Qatari Diar inked a deal with the local company in May 2008. The Palestinian Authority is backing the project because there is a severe housing shortage while the demand for housing is high.
