(MENAFN - The Peninsula) Vodafone will offer a special international rate for calls made to Egypt in honour of the nation's victory at the African Nations Cup (ANC), the mobile operator announced yesterday. The special rate of QR0.44/min will be valid all day on February 2, 2010 for all customers.

"We have so many Egyptian nationals who use our services—and we know many of them are avid football fans as well," said Vodafone Qatar's CMO Michael Portz. "This is our way of sharing the joy of these customers and Egypt's recent victory."

The Africa Cup of Nations is a 16-team football tournament that originated in 1957 and is held every two years. Egypt's victory over Ghana on January 31 marked its seventh win of the Cup of Nations, the most of any competing country. Last Sunday's victory was also Egypt's third consecutive win.

"This is a big moment for Egyptian football fans," said Mike Button, Vodafone Qatar's Product Manager for International Calling, "and we're sure that our customers have a lot of celebratory phone calls to make."

In it's first major international calling promotion Vodafone offered customers international calling to all destinations for QR0.50/min and met with widespread popularity. In the month of November alone over 150,000 customers joined Vodafone Qatar, and Vodafone customers made international calls amounting to 70 million minutes.

This promotion was reintroduced at the beginning of 2010 and will continue until February 14, 2010.

"In addition to giving our customers amazing international calling rates, we've also been tailoring our services to meet their individual needs," said Button, referring to Vodafone's late 2009 practice of sending customers special rates to the countries they call most. "By linking great rates to great occasions, we'll be giving them a little more value to help keep them in touch with their friends and loved ones."

Vodafone made good on this promise last month with special rates to India and Bangladesh in honour of a highly anticipated cricket match between those two countries. "Vodafone customers can expect to see more targeted special offers throughout the course of 2010," Button added.
