Dubai World’s Statistics Department officials and the UN Visiting delegation
(MENAFN Press) The United Nations has lauded Dubai Worlds Statistics Department for excellence in providing the most comprehensive statistical database on Dubais non-oil trading activities.
A delegation from the UN Statistics Division headed by Vladimir Markhonko, Head of Trade Statistics Branch, along with officials from the UAE Ministry of Economics, visited the Statistics Department last week, to study the departments data collection and distribution methods.
The visitors were introduced to the sophisticated data collection methods the department uses in maintaining its vast digital database covering every area of Dubais direct non-oil trade, including import, export and re-export of products through free zones and customs warehouses.
Saeed Alqaizi, Director of Group Procurement, Contracts, Statistics and General Administration, Dubai World, said: Dubai Worlds Statistics Department regularly co-ordinates its activities with leading international organisations such as the United Nations. This helps us in exchanging expertise and developing new data collection methods to match the changing demand of various economic sectors. We are pleased that our service has found strong positive response both at home and abroad.
The UN delegates appreciated the Statistics Departments policy of using sophisticated technology in its data collection work in order to ensure accuracy and speed.
The data provided by the Statistics Department has been eagerly accessed by local and federal government departments, ministries, embassies, consulates, trade missions, researchers, scholars, analysts, academicians, universities and the media.
Alqaizi said: Our data service has played an important role in the lead up to international exhibitions in the country, particularly in Dubai. Both organisers and exhibitors have found it timely, accurate and up-to-date.
Nassim Al Mehairi, Senior Manager of Statistics Department, said: Statistical data play a vital role in formulating economic development plans and preparing feasibility studies on investments in public and private sectors. A comprehensive and accurate data base helps in knowing the factors that affect the demand and supply of products and services. The UN delegation is on a tour of the UAE until April 30, visiting various economic and statistics departments and other organisations in co-ordination with the Ministry of Economy. The visit is part of the UN Statistics Divisions efforts to strengthen the global statistical system and co-ordinate international statistical activities.
