(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Commission (EC) announced here Monday that it has adopted a 314 million euro (USD 414 mn) package of projects to support agriculture and improve the food security situation in 23 developing countries across the globe.
This is the first financing decision in the framework of the one billion euro (USD 1.3 bn ) "Food Facility" which was adopted by the EU last December as a response to the growing food security problems faced by many developing countries.
"The package adopted today targets the 23 countries worst hit. This is a response to the food crisis which is already hitting developing countries," commented EU Commissioner for for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel.
The EC also agreed to an overall plan for the use of the entire amount of 1 bn euro, targeting 50 developing countries in total over the 3 year period (2009-11) in food and agriclutre aid .
The one bn euro package for the 3-year period includes 39.7 mn euro for Occupied Palestinian Territories, 21.3 mn for Yemen, 7.6 mn for Mauritania, 50 mn for Pakistan, 24.2 mn for Afghanistan and 50 mn for Bangladesh.
