(MENAFN) The Algerian Minister of Education said that the Government has allocated up to 83 million to illiteracy elimination in the framework of a national strategy, ElKhabar reported.

He indicated that this amount will be divided into 2 periods, the first one extends until 2013, of which objective is to curb illiteracy down to 10%; however, the second one will extend to 2016, and targets eliminating definitively illiteracy. Graduated students will be recruited to comply with this mission.

Moreover, the minister added that during 2008, 97% of children under 7 years old have access to school, while those aged between 6, and 15, reached 93%.

In a statement he addressed at the Parliament, on the occasion of the Parliamentary day of illiteracy elimination, the minister added that illiteracy rate in Algeria used to be around 85%, but shifted down 21.3%, currently.
