MUSCAT — After a few days of advancing, share prices retreated on the Muscat Securities Market (MSM) with the MSM-30 index shedding 12 points or 0.24 per cent lower at 4739 points. The financial sector registered modest gains as it advanced 0.4 per cent to 6294 points, whilst the services & insurance sector declined 18 points or 0.88 per cent to close at 2028 points. As for the industrial sector, the index closed flat at 3418 points. Trading volumes were slightly higher at 1.161 million generating a turnover of RO1.185 million. Omantel topped the list in terms of value and volume as 292, 614 shares were traded at a total of RO350,090. Omantel announced its first half results for the year 2006 with net profits marking an increase of 9.7 per cent over the net profit of the corresponding period of last year. Omantel closed at RO1.200, down 0.99 per cent from previous close. A total of 44 scrips traded with 17 scrips advancing, 16 declining and 11 unchanged. Sweets of Oman was the top advancer as it moved up 110 baisas (15.94 per cent) to close at RO0.800.
National Detergent, Al Jazeira Services, Transgulf Holding and Dhofar Power were also amongst the top advancers. As of August 6, 2006, the NAV of Muscat Fund was RO1.142 and the NAV of Oryx Fund was RO1.194. — BankMuscat
