LEE COUNTY: Commissioners to consider new property in Monday meeting

SANFORD, Sep 30, 2012 (Menafn - The Sanford Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --With a short agenda for Monday's meeting, Lee County Commissioners are set to consider financial documents concerning purchasing property to use as county office space and Central Carolina Community College's Small Business Center.

The county is considering purchasing property at 408 Summit Drive at 675,000 through a 59-month loan from Paul Howard to be used as office space for the county's Administration, Legal, Human Resources, GIS and Finance departments. The second property, located at 128-134 Steele St. is appraised for 200,000 and is set to be a gift to the community college to house its Small Business Development Center and a small business incubator.

According to a staff memo, the building on Steele Street is in good condition but the roof will need to be replaced within the next two to five years and there are two active leaks in the roof. The estimated cost to repair the roof is more than 76,000, according to a staff report in the agenda.

The area to be vacated by the county's departments in the Government Center will be used by the Department of Health and Social Service. The Summit property is also in need of some repair and there are costs associated with moving the offices including purchasing furniture and providing IT support. The move and extra space is a "big morale booster" for the departments that have worked in cramped spaces for several years, according to the report.

OTHER ITEMS ON THE AGENDA ARE,

* A resolution requesting the N.C. Department of Transportation conduct a public hearing as opposed to an information workshop regarding proposed changes to the intersection U.S. Highway 1 and Tramway Road. The resolution also calls for three options for road improvements for the intersection to be considered for the project.

* A resolution recognizing October 2012 to be Cyber-security month for Lee County.
