Callaway contracts to collect fees
CALLAWAY, Feb 10, 2013 (Menafn - The News Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --The city of Callaway will enter into agreements with the Bay County property appraiser and tax collector to levy Sandy Creek assessments.
The contracts bind the city to reimburse the property appraiser and tax collector any cost incurred as a result of the city using the uniform method for collecting due assessments from Sandy Creek residents and accounts.
The contracts are expected to be signed at the City Commission meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Arts and Conference Center, 500 Callaway Park Way.
The uniform method allows the city to levy assessments through property taxes. The city will use the method to collect about 800,000 in fees and assessments associated with the Sandy Creek water system overhaul from 223 accounts over 10 years at one payment per year.
Every year the contract will be automatically renewed until the 10-year collection process is complete.
The city also will go into an agreement with the Bay County Commission to use appraisal software to integrate Sandy Creek assessments into county property appraiser and tax collector records. The agreement will allow Sandy Creek assessments to appear on annual TRIM -- or truth in millage -- notices, as well as final tax notices and bills.
Also at the meeting, City Clerk Jennifer Vigil will present an item concerning the city's telecommunications system, which is currently operating through five companies.
The board is expected to authorize City Manager Marcus Collins to enter into a contract with Knology, whereby the company will be the "sole source" for the city's telecommunications system. The telecommunications consolidation is expected to save the city 660 annually. In order to get the service, the city previously approved and budgeted 2,000 to have a conduit line dug.
Also Tuesday, due to new operating hours, new after-hours water reconnection fees will be recommended by the city's director of finance. Since the billing office is now open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (previously, Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), a Friday 55 reconnection fee will be reduced to 10 on Fridays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 55 fee will remain in effect for weekdays, 6 to 8 p.m. The office is closed on weekends.
