County 4-H clubs to hold sign-ups
Cooke County, Aug 24, 2012 (Menafn - Gainesville Daily Register - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Representatives of Cooke County 4-H have announced a sign-up event for all new and returning members of 4-H for the 2012-13 season.
Cooke County Agri-Life Extension Agent Phyllis Griffin, who also leads the local 4-H program, will present the event. It is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the First State Bank Conference Center, 837 E. California Street, in Gainesville.
A Texas 4-H participation fee of 20 is assessed for each member, and Cooke County presently offers 10 different clubs to area youth.
"Our club managers felt that a centralized sign-up would give families a better chance to learn when each club meets and what programming they specifically offer, before making a choice to join the club that best suits the schedules and interests of their children," Griffin said.
All county youth who are at least eight years old and in third grade as of Aug. 31, 2012, are eligible to join, regardless if they attend public, private or home school. Age 18 is the maximum age for 4-H membership.
Active community clubs are chartered in Valley View, Era, Lindsay, Muenster and Woodbine. The Red River, Sharp Shooters, Rabbit, Livestock and Midnight Mustang clubs meet in Gainesville. Youth may enroll in more than one club if they desire. For instance, many youth belong to their nearest community club and also enroll in one of the specialized clubs: Sharp Shooters, Rabbits, Livestock or Midnight Mustangs.
The 4-H organization has operated in Texas for more than 100 years. Youth are afforded a variety of opportunities to make new friends, improve their communication skills, participate in projects and compete in contests including the Cooke County Youth Fair. Dedicated 4-H members eventually earn the chance to serve in leadership positions, travel to conferences and apply for valuable scholarships.
