How to Hire Employees

[-] Text [+]

Employees are the heart and soul of any business as directing the work scenario in your company definitely requires good casting! No one can deny the fact that even minor employees contribute to the success of any business and therefore hiring managers or members of the interviewing team have to assess a candidate’s overall traits to determine competency and motivation to do the work.

Writing Job Descriptions

Outlining job descriptions for a potential employees will help you appraise the candidate’s competency for the job and will assist you in drafting the questions that you need to ask at the interview. Confer with an existing employee who already has the same job descriptions to make sure you don't exclude essential qualifications. Small companies would often disregard this step and ask the same questions at every interview forgetting the fact that some candidates may have other excellent traits that can contribute to the growth of the business. A job description will also aid you as an employer to determine other factors besides competency such as salary ranges. It could also prevent misunderstandings between you and the potential employee in terms of the tasks the job requires.

Evaluating the Market

It is a smart step to evaluate the job market and carry out salary surveys among similar business to determine how much budget you need to allocate for wages. You should also look into what benefits and incentives the job market is offering for the position you’re looking to fill. To get competent staff you have got to put a realistic strategy for hiring.

Employment Websites and Recruiting Agencies

There are a large number of websites which allow employers to submit job requirements for a vacant position. Employees through these job websites can fill out a job application or post resumes over the Internet for the advertised position. These websites provide positions in real time as people looking for jobs can search and apply at any time during the day. Also, there are several professional employment organizations which could help you find the appropriate employee according to your requirements. Some employment agencies handle the hiring process from A to Z where all you need to do is take the final decision. These agencies are particularly helpful with jobs that are in high demand such as accounting or IT-related jobs.

Word-of-Mouth Advertising

Some companies depend on word of mouth advertising which is practically an extremely cheap and useful way of hiring employees. You can just tell your friends, family, business associates, and present employees about the vacant position. In return, these people would probably recommend the most befitting candidates for the job as they know the characteristics of the potential employee you have in mind.

Planning interviews

Prepare in advance the questions you need to ask to the applicants and apply conformity in all of your interviews in order to make a fair comparison among candidates. You have to remember that some questions are inappropriate such as asking single people if they are going to get married or not or inquiring about religion or race. If you need to know certain information about a candidate such as when a pregnant woman is due, make sure to ask it in a way that will not put either of you in an awkward situation. In order to save time and effort, make sure that applicants are prescreened by several phone interviews before face-to-face interviews.

Checking references

References need to be mentioned in a resume for a reason which is for you to double check. Some applicants may twist the truth about vital information such as getting a degree. Some would even mention that they have worked in a company for a considerable amount of time when in reality they worked for a month or two. It is very important to double check the references or ask the applicant to supply you with references if not mentioned in the resume, This step can save you the trouble of going through what the former employer of the applicant went through.

Some businesses often resort to internship to hire suitable candidates for the vacancies they have open. Interns are usually college or university students or adults who want to learn skills for a new career; Interns are either paid, partially paid or unpaid at all. Those interns, if found competent, can be very useful to your business as they would have learned some of the skills during their internship. You can get interns through contacting universities, colleges, institutes or other and brief them about your business so they can send you a list of graduates or college seniors from the fields close to your business. Many of these establishments will often be very cooperative as you would find departments that handle this matter.
