11 Taliban join peace process in Sar-i-Pul


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) SAR-I-PUL (Pajhwok): Nearly a dozen Taliban rebels, including two key €commanders, have joined the peace process in northern Sar-i-Pul, an official said on Monday.

Led by commander Rahimullah, the 11-member group had been active against the government in Lati and Balaghi villages on the outskirts of the provincial capital.

They turned 11 Kalashnikovs and one Walkie-Talkie, Governor Mohammad Zahir Wahdat said at a ceremony welcoming the former rebels, who surrendered to Afghan Local Police (ALP).

The governor also urged other militants to renounce violence and join the peace process in order to prevent of innocent people particularly women and children from killed and maimed.

The groups second commander, Mullah Mirza, said: "I'm glad to have shunned the insurgency and want the government to launch development projects in our area."

The Taliban have not yet commented regarding the issue.
