Egypt: Sami Anan to run for presidential elections


(MENAFN) The former military Chief of Staff, Sami Anan, announced his intention to run in the 2018 presidential election scheduled on March 26 and 28 inside Egypt, through a televised speech.

"I made my decision to present my nomination papers to the National Electoral Commission as a presidential candidate, in accordance to the announced rules and dates by the commission," Anan said.

Once he has finished all necessary procedures pertaining to his position as former Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, he will submit his candidacy for the post of President of the Republic, Anan said during the speech.

If Anan manages to complete his candidacy requirements, he will be a strong rival for the current president.

In order for his candidacy to be accepted, Egyptian Constitution requires the candidate to be recommended by at least 20 elected parliamentarians or endorsed by at least 25,000 citizens who have the right to vote, in at least 15 governorates, with a minimum of 1,000 supporters from each governorate.

Many thinks that if Anan completed his candidacy necessities, he will be a strong rival for the current president.
