(MENAFN) Pope Francis has raised concern during his trip to Peru on business interests' threat to the Amazon and its citizens.

The region had never witnessed such a threat before, the Pope warned locals in the small town of Puerto Maldonado.

Tribal elders have appealed for the Pope for their security to be guaranteed as they explained their lands were taken away from them.

Pope Francis, aged 81, is in Peru for his second and last Latin America week-long tour.
